Even at the beginning of the XX century Saratov was one the largest cities of the Volga Region; now its population exceeds 900, 000. Saratov?s moderate continental climate determines a great variety of natural landscapes. Saratov Region contains zoological reserves and the state nature park Khvalynsky. The most impressive natural sight is Saratov Chine, which is connected with many legends.
As an industrial, scientific and educational center and transport point, the city is located at a focus of native Russian culture. Every building and every square bears microcosms of a wonderful past. Russians who visit Saratov feel the spirit of their great history.
The usual Russian souvenirs such as matryoshkas are available in Saratov, although if travelling through Moscow it is probably best to wait to get them there as they will be cheaper.
The markets in Saratov are useful spots to pick up winter clothes if necessary, including coats, boots, leather gloves and of course hats. Haggling is indulged.
Prospekt Kirova is the most upmarket shopping area in the city, with fancy boutiques selling expensive shoes, bags and jewellery. There are branches for Mango, Nike, Reebok, Adidas, United Colors of Benetton, and L'Occitane among others. Also on Prospekt Kirova is an excellent tobacconist, selling all kinds of pipes and tobacco including hookah pipes, as well as a speciality tea shop.
Saratov (en Саратов) est une ville de Russie, capitale administrative de l'oblast de Saratov. Elle est située à au sud-est de Moscou, sur la rive droite de la Volga (réservoir de Volgograd). Saratov est un nœud ferroviaire et routier important, elle possède un port fluvial et un aéroport international. Sa population s'élève à habitants en 2008, ce qui en fait la 15 ville de Russie. Elle forme avec Engels et d'autres villes une agglomération 1, 19 million d'habitants en 2005.
Saratov est un centre industriel important diversifié, et le siège de nombreuses institutions culturelles et pédagogiques, dont une Alliance française.
