Lomé est la capitale du Togo. Elle se situe à l'extrême sud-ouest du Togo, et s'étend le long du littoral du Golfe de Guinée. Même si beaucoup avancent le chiffre d'un million d'habitants, officiellement, l'agglomération compte 796 416 habitants (chiffre de 2006), tandis que la ville compte 737 751 habitants.

Son agglomération se développe jusqu'à la frontière avec le Ghana, situé à quelques centaine de métres du centre ville. Ainsi, Lomé est une ville/frontière.

Lomé n’est ni une ville "coloniale" (construite et établi par les puissances coloniales), ni une "ville traditionnelle" (où les racines villageoises seraient encore inscrites dans les structures et les processus urbains)
