I would have to agree with people saying that the place is a bit overrated. There's only a small patch of land where they groom bamboo, otherwise the town itself is a nice walk. Since I went there on the weekends, the place was really crowded, it is hard to take pictures.
Keep your expectation low, it'll be fine.

By itself, it's questionable to visit if it is not near where you're staying. At the very beginning there is a great spot to take a picture, but everything following is either monotonous or a hashed down version of the beginning. That being said, it is peaceful,, and it's bamboo!!! Because it is located near a couple of shrines and shops the overall visit is worth a go.

Arashiyama is perhaps the 2nd most famous spot in Kyoto after Fushimi-Inari. The district is filled with temples and shrines but really, we all know why we are here. Densely packed bamboo trees that shoot up into the sky, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
I’m really amazed by this. Yes, the place is packed to the brim. But when you lift your head and fix your eyes upon the sky, all you see is just tranquility. Crowds can’t climb that far up. Even in the crowd, it’s peacefully quiet. You are deep in the forest after all, and this forest grows a level of zen that is truly enchanting.
Bamboo is symbol of prosperity in Japan and used in almost everything. Chopsticks, wind instrument, even houses. I’ll add beauty and strength to it too. Something that is both strong and beautiful should be cherished. Loved.

Over hyped for sure. It's not a forest, but a small patch of groomed bamboo. The famous picture is really the only photo spot. Surrounding town is worth a visit.

Very short and unless you go early (like 8 am or before) it's really crowded. It's pretty small, so I'd only do it if you're close enough to other things. The reviews calling it peaceful must have been very off season or at 6 am.
